Surgical Options & Procedures

Hurley Medical Center’s Bariatric Surgery program offers four minimally invasive procedures, each designed to help you achieve lasting weight loss and health improvements with expert medical oversight.

Minimally Invasive Approach

All of our surgeries are performed laparoscopically through 4–6 small (≤1") incisions. A camera and specialized instruments are used, and your abdomen is gently inflated with carbon dioxide for optimal visibility.

Surgical Procedures

Gastric Bypass

What it is: Creates a small 1-2 ounce stomach pouch that connects directly to the middle of the small intestine, bypassing the rest of the stomach and the first segment of intestine.

Hospital stay: 1-2 nights

Benefits:

  • Weight loss: ~60–70% of excess body weight lost in 12-24 months
  • Health gains: Often resolves type 2 diabetes, lowers blood pressure, and improves acid reflux

Sleeve Gastrectomy

What it is: Removes 75–85% of the stomach to form a narrow “sleeve,” without bypassing intestine.

Hospital stay: 1-2 nights

Benefits:

  • Weight loss: ~50–60% of excess body weight in 12-24 months
  • Appetite control: Reduced hunger hormone production
  • Minimal malabsorption: Natural digestive flow preserved

SADI-S (Single-Anastomosis Duodenal-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve)

What it is: Combines a sleeve gastrectomy with a single small-bowel bypass (duodeno-ileal anastomosis) for both restriction and moderate malabsorption.

Hospital stay: 1–2 nights

Benefits:

  • Weight loss: ~65–75% of excess body weight in 12-24 months
  • Metabolic improvement: Powerful effects on diabetes and lipid profiles

Adjustable Gastric Band

What it is: An inflatable silicone band placed around the upper stomach to create a small pouch; band tightness is adjusted via a port.

Hospital stay: 1 night

Benefits:

  • Weight loss: ~40% of excess body weight in 12-36 months

FAQ

  • How do I know which bariatric procedure is right for me?

If you’re considering bariatric surgery, we invite you to attend one of our free educational seminars—online or in-person—where we cover all four options: Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, , SADI-S, and Adjustable Gastric Band.

After the seminar, your surgeon and care team will review your medical history, weight loss goals, and any health conditions to recommend the procedure that best fits your needs. Together, we’ll create a personalized plan to achieve your weight loss goals safely and effectively.

  • How much weight loss can I expect?

Average one-year weight loss varies by procedure:

    • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: 60–70% of excess body weight
    • Sleeve Gastrectomy: 50–60%
    • Adjustable Gastric Band: ~40%
    • SADI-S: 65–75%

Your individual results will depend on your adherence to the recommended diet, exercise, and follow-up care.

  • What are the risks associated with bariatric surgery?

All surgical procedures carry risks such as bleeding, infection, blood clots, and anesthesia reactions. Each bariatric option also has procedure-specific considerations.

Your surgeon will review all risks related to your health and chosen procedure during your consultation.

  • How long will I stay in the hospital after my bariatric surgery?

Because all our procedures are minimally invasive, most patients go home within 2 days. Typical stays by procedure:

    • Adjustable Gastric Band: 1 night
    • Roux-en-Y, Sleeve Gastrectomy, SADI-S: 1–2 nights

Your surgeon will confirm your expected stay based on your health and the specific procedure.

  • What can I do to prepare for my weight loss surgery?

You’ll meet with your care team—including your surgeon, dietitian, and other specialists—multiple times before surgery. Together, you’ll:

    • Develop a customized pre-op diet and exercise plan
    • Learn how to prevent nutritional deficiencies after surgery
    • Make lifestyle adjustments to support long-term success

We also recommend involving family and friends—having a support network increases your odds of success.

  • Will I know what my exercise and diet requirements are after my weight loss surgery?

Yes. You’ll receive detailed guidance before and after surgery from your dietitian and clinical team. This includes:

    • A customized post-op diet plan
    • A personalized exercise program to aid recovery and maintain weight loss
    • Ongoing education on nutrition and lifestyle to prevent nutritional gaps
  • How long after bariatric surgery can I return to work?

Most patients return to sedentary or office-based work within 2–4 weeks. Your recovery timeline depends on your procedure, physical condition, and job demands. Your care team will advise when it’s safe to resume your normal activities.

  • What type of support is available after my bariatric surgery?

Long-term success relies on consistent follow-up. At Hurley Comprehensive Weight Loss Center, we offer:

    • Regular clinic visits with your dietitian and care team
    • Medically supervised support groups
