SADI-S Weight Loss Surgery
A New Path to Lasting Weight Loss
Hurley Comprehensive Weight Loss Center is one of the first programs in Michigan to offer SADI-S surgery using the advanced da Vinci 5 robotic system. This minimally invasive procedure is designed for people with morbid obesity who are seeking safe, effective, and lasting weight loss.
What Is SADI-S?
SADI-S (Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy) is the newest weight loss surgery endorsed by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. It’s a modified version of the duodenal switch, but simpler, because it requires only one intestinal reconnection instead of two.
This makes the procedure quicker, technically easier for surgeons, and potentially safer—while still delivering excellent results.
How the Procedure Works
SADI-S combines two steps:
- Sleeve Gastrectomy: About 80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a smaller, tube-shaped stomach. This limits how much you can eat and helps you feel full sooner.
- Intestinal Bypass: The upper part of the small intestine is reconnected further down, so food bypasses part of the intestine. This reduces how many calories and nutrients are absorbed.
Together, these changes lead to powerful weight loss and improved health.
Benefits of SADI-S
- Significant Weight Loss: On average, patients may lose 75-80% of excess body weight.
- Better Health: High rates of improvement or remission of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea.
- Metabolic Advantages: Positive hormonal changes can improve metabolism and reduce appetite.
- Simpler Design: With only one intestinal reconnection, there’s less surgical complexity compared to gastric bypass or traditional duodenal switch.
Why the Da Vinci 5 Robot Matters
At Hurley, every SADI-S procedure is performed using the da Vinci 5 surgical robot — the most advanced system of its kind.
What this means for you:
- Greater Precision: Robotic technology gives your surgeon enhanced vision, control, and dexterity for delicate movements.
- Smaller Incisions: The minimally invasive approach often leads to less pain, less scarring, and faster recovery.
- Safety Advantage: The da Vinci 5 includes advanced features like real-time force sensing, designed to reduce tissue trauma.
- Next-Generation Care: Hurley is among the first in Michigan to bring this breakthrough to patients.
By combining cutting-edge technology with the expertise of our surgical team, we aim to give you the best possible outcome.
Risks and Considerations
Like all bariatric surgeries, SADI-S has both benefits and risks. Important considerations include:
- Lifelong Supplements: Patients must take daily vitamins and minerals (such as multivitamins, iron, calcium, and B12) to avoid deficiencies.
- Digestive Changes: Looser or more frequent bowel movements, gas, and possible reflux can occur.
- Nutrient Absorption: Because of the intestinal bypass, there’s a risk of malnutrition without proper follow-up and monitoring.
- Newer Procedure: Long-term outcome data is still being collected.
At Hurley, we provide ongoing support, nutrition guidance, and long-term monitoring to help patients succeed safely.
Is SADI-S Right for You?
SADI-S may be a good fit if you:
- Have struggled to lose weight with other methods
- Want more weight loss than what a sleeve gastrectomy alone provides
- Are seeking a simpler alternative to gastric bypass or duodenal switch
- Are ready to commit to lifelong healthy habits and supplements
Our team will review your health history and goals to help you decide if this procedure is the right next step.
