Spinal Cord Injury
A spinal cord injury is damage to the bundle of nerves that carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body. It’s most often caused by sudden trauma, such as a fall, vehicle accident, or sports injury.
Signs & Symptoms
- Loss of movement or muscle weakness
- Loss of sensation, including the ability to feel heat, cold, or touch
- Changes in bladder or bowel control
- Pain or an intense stinging sensation from nerve damage
Causes & Risk Factors
Trauma is the most common cause of spinal cord injury. Less commonly, a spinal cord injury can result from a tumor, infection, or a condition that reduces blood supply to the spinal cord.
Diagnosis
Spinal cord injuries are typically evaluated urgently with a neurological exam and imaging (CT or MRI) to determine the location and severity of the injury.
