Skull Base Tumors

Skull base tumors develop in the complex area of bone at the base of the skull, where the brain meets the spine, sinuses, and major nerves and blood vessels. A skull base encephalocele — where brain tissue or its lining protrudes through a defect in this bone — is one specific condition treated in this area.

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms depend heavily on the tumor’s exact location and can include headaches, vision or hearing changes, facial numbness, nasal congestion, or clear fluid leaking from the nose.

Causes & Risk Factors

Most skull base tumors have no known single cause, though some are linked to inherited genetic conditions or prior radiation exposure.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically involves MRI and CT imaging, often in coordination with ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialists given the location’s complexity.

Treatment Options

Treatment is highly individualized and may involve surgery — often using minimally invasive, endoscopic approaches through the nose — radiation, or monitoring, depending on the tumor type and location.
