Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. It most often appears during the growth spurt before puberty, though it can occur at any age, including as a degenerative change later in life.
Signs & Symptoms
- Uneven shoulders, with one shoulder blade more prominent than the other
- Uneven waist or one hip higher than the other
- A visible curve or lean to one side
- In adults, back pain may accompany the curve
Causes & Risk Factors
Most childhood scoliosis has no single known cause. In adults, scoliosis can develop or worsen due to age-related degenerative changes in the spine.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam and an X-ray to measure the degree of curvature, which helps guide whether monitoring, bracing, or another treatment approach is appropriate.
Treatment Options
Mild curves are often simply monitored over time. Depending on the degree of curvature, age, and symptoms, bracing or surgical options may be recommended.
