Schwannomatosis

Schwannomatosis is a rare genetic condition that causes multiple non-cancerous tumors, called schwannomas, to develop along nerves throughout the body — typically without affecting the hearing nerves, which distinguishes it from related conditions like neurofibromatosis type 2.

Signs & Symptoms

The most common symptom is chronic pain, which can occur anywhere multiple schwannomas develop. Numbness, tingling, or weakness can also occur if a tumor presses on a nerve.

Causes & Risk Factors

Schwannomatosis is caused by a genetic change and can run in families, though many cases occur without a known family history.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis involves a physical and neurological exam, imaging (MRI) to identify the schwannomas, and sometimes genetic testing.

Treatment Options

Treatment focuses on managing pain and monitoring tumors over time. Surgery may be considered for tumors causing significant pain or pressing on a nerve.
