Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement, caused by the gradual loss of nerve cells that produce dopamine in the brain.
Signs & Symptoms
- Tremor, often starting in one hand
- Slowness of movement
- Muscle stiffness
- Balance or coordination problems
Symptoms typically develop gradually and worsen over time.
Causes & Risk Factors
The exact cause is unknown, though a combination of genetic and environmental factors is thought to play a role. Risk increases with age.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based primarily on a neurological exam and the pattern of symptoms; imaging is sometimes used to rule out other conditions.
Treatment Options
Most people manage Parkinson’s disease with medication, especially in earlier stages. For symptoms that no longer respond well to medication, surgical options such as deep brain stimulation may be considered.
