Medulloblastoma

Medulloblastoma is a fast-growing tumor that develops in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance and coordination. It’s one of the more common malignant brain tumors in children, though it can occur at any age.

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms often relate to increased pressure in the brain and can include headaches, nausea and vomiting, and difficulty with balance or coordination.

Causes & Risk Factors

The cause is generally unknown. A small number of cases are linked to inherited genetic syndromes.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis involves brain imaging (MRI) and a surgical biopsy or sample to confirm the tumor type, along with imaging of the spine, since medulloblastoma can spread through the spinal fluid.

Treatment Options

Treatment typically involves surgery followed by radiation and/or chemotherapy, coordinated with a pediatric oncology team when the patient is a child.
