Intracranial Hematoma & Hemorrhage

An intracranial hematoma is a collection of blood within the skull, most often caused by a head injury, while intracranial hemorrhage refers more broadly to bleeding within the brain or the spaces surrounding it.

Signs & Symptoms

  • A worsening headache
  • Confusion or drowsiness
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness on one side of the body
  • Loss of consciousness, in more severe cases

Causes & Risk Factors

Head trauma is the most common cause. Other causes include high blood pressure, blood-thinning medications, aneurysms, or abnormal blood vessels.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made urgently with CT or MRI imaging of the brain.

Treatment Options

Depending on size and severity, treatment ranges from close monitoring to emergency surgery to remove the blood clot and relieve pressure.
