Head and Neck Cancers
Head and neck cancers are a group of cancers that develop in the mouth, throat, sinuses, nasal cavity, or other structures of the head and neck. When these cancers extend toward the base of the skull, coordinated neurosurgical care may be needed.
Signs & Symptoms
Symptoms depend on the exact location and can include a persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing, a lump in the neck, changes in voice, or nasal congestion that doesn’t improve.
Causes & Risk Factors
Tobacco and alcohol use are the most significant risk factors for many head and neck cancers; certain viral infections are also linked to some types.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam, imaging (CT or MRI), and a biopsy of the affected tissue.
Treatment Options
Treatment is coordinated across a multidisciplinary team and may include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Our neurosurgeons become involved when a cancer extends toward the skull base or brain, working alongside the rest of your care team.
