CSF Leak
A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak occurs when the fluid that surrounds and cushions the brain and spinal cord escapes through a tear or defect, often at the base of the skull or in the spine.
Signs & Symptoms
Symptoms often include a headache that worsens when sitting or standing and improves when lying down, along with clear fluid draining from the nose or ear, or a salty taste at the back of the throat.
Causes & Risk Factors
Causes include head injury, prior sinus or skull base surgery, or a spontaneous leak related to increased pressure around the brain. Some cases have no clear identifiable cause.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves specialized imaging (CT or MRI) and, sometimes, laboratory testing of the fluid to confirm it’s cerebrospinal fluid.
Treatment Options
Some leaks resolve with conservative measures such as bed rest. Persistent leaks are often treated with minimally invasive surgical repair, frequently performed through the nose.
