Chiari Malformation
A Chiari malformation occurs when brain tissue extends into the spinal canal, usually because the space at the base of the skull is smaller than normal. Many people with a Chiari malformation have no symptoms at all and never need treatment.
Signs & Symptoms
- Headache, often at the back of the head and worse with coughing, sneezing, or straining
- Neck pain
- Balance problems or unsteadiness
- Numbness or tingling in the hands
Causes & Risk Factors
Most Chiari malformations are present from birth. Less commonly, one can develop later in life due to injury, infection, or conditions that affect the drainage of spinal fluid.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made with a neurological exam and MRI imaging of the brain and upper spine.
Treatment Options
Patients without symptoms are often simply monitored over time. When symptoms are significant, surgery to relieve pressure may be recommended.
