FAQ

  • How do I know which bariatric procedure is right for me?

If you're considering bariatric surgery, we invite you to attend one of our free educational seminars—online or in-person—where we cover all four options: Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, SADI-S, and Adjustable Gastric Band.

After the seminar, we encourage you to schedule a consultation appointment where the surgeon and care team will review your medical history, weight loss goals, and any health conditions to recommend the procedure that best fits your needs. Together, we will create a personalized plan to help you achieve your weight loss goals safely and effectively.

  • How much weight loss can I expect?

Average one-year weight loss varies by procedure:

    • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: 60–70% of excess body weight
    • Sleeve Gastrectomy: 50–60%
    • Adjustable Gastric Band: ~40%
    • SADI-S: 65–75%

Your individual results will depend on your adherence to the recommended diet, exercise, and follow-up care.

  • What are the risks associated with bariatric surgery?

All surgical procedures carry risks such as bleeding, infection, blood clots, and anesthesia reactions. Each bariatric option also has procedure-specific considerations.

Your surgeon will review all risks related to your health and chosen procedure during your consultation.

  • How long will I stay in the hospital after my bariatric surgery?

Because all our procedures are minimally invasive, most patients go home within 2 days. Typical hospital stays per procedure are as follows:

    • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, SADI-S: 1–2 nights
    • Adjustable Gastric Band: 1 night
  • What can I do to prepare for my weight loss surgery?

You'll meet with your care team—including your surgeon, dietitian, and other specialists—multiple times before surgery. Together, you'll:

    • Develop a customized pre-op diet and exercise plan
    • Learn how to prevent nutritional deficiencies after surgery
    • Make lifestyle adjustments to support long-term success

We also recommend involving family and friends—having a support network increases your odds of success.

  • Will I know what my exercise and diet requirements are after my weight loss surgery?

Yes. You'll receive detailed guidance before and after surgery from your dietitian and clinical team. This includes:

    • Diet education classes
    • Exercise recommendations to aid recovery and maintain weight loss
    • Ongoing education regarding nutrition and lifestyle to prevent nutritional deficiencies
  • How long after bariatric surgery can I return to work?

Most patients return to work 2–4 weeks following surgery.

  • What type of support is available after my bariatric surgery?

Long-term success relies on consistent follow-up. At Hurley Comprehensive Weight Loss Center, we offer:

    • Regular clinic visits with your dietitian
    • Medically supervised support groups
    • Post-surgical education and support programs
