Vertebral Compression Fracture

A vertebral compression fracture is a break in one of the spine’s bones (vertebrae) that causes it to collapse in height, often into a wedge shape. It’s most common in people with weakened bones (osteoporosis), but can also result from injury or, less commonly, a tumor.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Sudden back pain, often after a minor fall, lifting, or even a cough or sneeze in someone with weak bones
  • Pain that worsens with standing or walking and improves with lying down
  • Loss of height over time or a stooped posture, if multiple fractures occur

Causes & Risk Factors

Osteoporosis is the leading cause, making these fractures more common in older adults, especially postmenopausal women. Trauma, and less often a tumor weakening the bone, can also cause a compression fracture.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam and imaging — X-ray, CT, or MRI — to confirm the fracture and rule out other causes, such as a tumor.

Treatment Options

Many compression fractures improve with pain management, bracing, and activity modification. For fractures that don’t improve, minimally invasive options to stabilize the bone may be considered as part of our treatment approach.
