Esthesioneuroblastoma

Esthesioneuroblastoma is a rare cancer that develops in the upper part of the nasal cavity, in the tissue responsible for the sense of smell. It can grow into the sinuses and, in more advanced cases, the base of the skull or brain.

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms can include nasal congestion or blockage, nosebleeds, loss of sense of smell, and, as the tumor grows, headaches or vision changes.

Causes & Risk Factors

The cause isn’t well understood, and there are no clearly established risk factors.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically involves nasal endoscopy, imaging (MRI and CT), and a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment Options

Treatment usually combines surgery, often performed jointly with ENT specialists, with radiation and sometimes chemotherapy.
