Conditions We Treat
The Hurley Neurological Center evaluates and treats a wide range of brain, spine, and nerve conditions — from common causes of neck and back pain to complex brain tumors. Below is a general overview of the conditions our team sees, grouped by category. This page is meant to help you recognize the kind of care we offer; it is not a substitute for an evaluation by your doctor. If you don’t see your condition listed, call us at 810-262-7030 — there’s a good chance we can still help.
Spine Conditions
Most people who come to us with neck or back pain are dealing with wear-and-tear changes in the spine rather than something rare. We start with a full evaluation and, whenever possible, a conservative treatment plan before considering surgery.
- Degenerative disc disease (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine)
- Herniated disc
- Sciatica
- Pinched nerve (radiculopathy)
- Spinal stenosis (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar)
- Spondylolisthesis and other degenerative spine changes
- Facet joint syndrome
- Scoliosis
- Vertebral compression fracture
- Spine tumors, including spinal cord tumors and spinal cord lymphoma
- Spinal cord injury
- Failed back surgery syndrome
Brain Tumors
A brain tumor diagnosis is frightening, and tumors vary enormously in how they behave and how they’re best treated. Our team evaluates each case individually, in coordination with oncology and radiation specialists when needed.
- Meningioma
- Glioma, including glioblastoma, astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, ependymoma, and pilocytic astrocytoma
- Pituitary tumors
- Craniopharyngioma
- Brain metastases (cancer that has spread to the brain from elsewhere in the body)
- Pediatric brain tumors
- Medulloblastoma
- Brain lymphoma
- Brain and spine cancer, broadly
Skull Base & Cranial Nerve Conditions
Skull base surgery calls for close coordination between neurosurgery and ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialists, since these conditions sit at the crossroads of the brain, sinuses, and cranial nerves.
- Acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma)
- Skull base tumors, including skull base encephaloceles
- Chordoma and chondrosarcoma of the skull or spine
- Esthesioneuroblastoma
- Nasal and paranasal tumors
- Head and neck cancers
- CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) leak
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Hemifacial spasm
Vascular Conditions of the Brain & Spine
Blood vessel conditions in and around the brain and spine often require a specialized, minimally invasive approach. Our team works closely with interventional and cerebrovascular specialists on these cases.
- Cerebral aneurysm
- Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the brain and spine
- Cavernous malformations of the brain and spine
- Dural arteriovenous fistulas
- Moyamoya disease
- Intracranial hematoma and hemorrhage
- Intracranial venous malformations
- Subdural hemorrhage, including treatment with middle meningeal artery embolization
Neurological & Nerve Conditions
Beyond tumors and structural spine conditions, our neurosurgeons treat a number of conditions involving the brain’s electrical activity and the nervous system’s structure.
- Epilepsy & Seizures
- Parkinson’s disease
- Essential tremor
- Hydrocephalus (excess fluid around the brain)
- Chiari malformation
- Traumatic brain injury
- Peripheral nerve injuries and tumors
- Plexiform neurofibroma
- Schwannomatosis
