As the region’s leader in breast health and breast cancer treatment, the Hurley Breast Cancer Program is making that belief a reality by consistently providing the highest level of clinical breast cancer care and compassion for patients and their families.
National Accreditation Program for Breast Health Certified
The Breast Cancer Program at Hurley Medical Center was recently certified by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), the only accrediting body of the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer that accredits breast programs. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease. This is the highest accreditation awarded to an institution’s breast program and Hurley is the first and only medical center in Genesee County to receive this distinction, out of a total of only six medical facilities statewide.
Breast Health Nurse Navigator Program
Hurley also provides a Breast Health Nurse Navigator Program, the only program of its kind in Genesee County. This extremely caring, highly-trained registered nurse provides breast cancer patients with the latest information and research, and connects them with resources for nutrition, lifestyle, emotional, and spiritual support, demonstrating Hurley’s commitment to providing patient- and family-centered care at a very stressful time in these patients’ lives. Weekly Tumor Board Conferences
Each week, a collaborative panel of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, social workers, case managers, tumor registras, a nurse navigator, a genetic counselor and an internist meet to review all current breast cancer cases, while maintaining patient privacy. Details of each patient's care are discussed, including pathology and radiology reports and recommended treatments. During these weekly conferences, the physicians discuss appropriate clinical trials and current treatment regimens. They also validate the standard of care according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines.
