Busting The Midwife Myth
Contrary to popular belief, a Certified Nurse Midwife doesn’t just provide maternity care, but is specially trained to offer general healthcare over the entire course of a woman’s life. These services include:
- care for pregnancy, labor and birth
- newborn care, if born healthy
- general health care services
- annual gynecologic exams
- family planning needs
- treatment of sexually transmitted diseases
- care during teenage years
- care during menopause
At Hurley Medical Center, our Certified Nurse Midwives are registered nurses who have received advanced education in midwifery from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education. After passing the national certification exam of the American Midwifery Certification Board, they work closely with obstetricians and other members of the health care team to provide complete care during pregnancy, labor or delivery, even in the event of complications.
Our Midwifery program has the added benefit of delivery at Hurley Medical Center with access to the area’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (the highest level NICU in Genesee, Lapeer, and Shiawassee Counties).
Many insurance providers and federal employee health plans cover midwife services, including private insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, managed care programs, and military. Please contact your provider for specific details of your coverage.
