Rehabilitation Neuropsychology
The following describes Hurley's medical psychology services with particular emphasis on the field of rehabilitation neuropsychology. For specific information regarding your health and treatment options, please contact your Hurley physician or medical professional.
Hurley is the only hospital in Genesee County with a Department of Psychology and specialists who see patients every day
The medical psychology team at Hurley Medical Center offers a wide range of services to patients and families who are dealing with chronic medical illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, childhood disorders, and neurologic conditions, as well as burns. In fact, Hurley is the only hospital in Genesee County with an independent Department of Psychology and a dedicated team of psychologists who see patients in the hospital on a daily basis.
Rehabilitation psychologists seek to empower individuals with disabilities and chronic health conditions to achieve meaningful and personally fulfilling lives. Hurley Medical Center has maintained a fellowship program in Medical Psychology since 1993. A member of the Consortium for Advanced Psychology Training, Hurley’s program was the first in the country to receive specialty accreditation in Health Psychology through the American Psychological Association.
Comprehensive neuropsychology resources
In addition to pediatric psychologists and health psychologists, Hurley Medical Center has a neuropsychology team who provides comprehensive services for children and adults with various neurologic disorders or injuries, from infants to 100-year-olds.
Directing the team is a neuropsychologist who is board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) and also board certified in rehabilitation psychology (ABRP). In fact, Hurley is the only hospital in northwest Michigan with a neuropsychologist on staff with these qualifications. A pediatric neuropsychologist completes the neuropsychology team. As members of Michigan State University’s teaching faculty, these two Hurley specialists (along with two postdoctoral fellows) supervise and precept medical students from the Michigan State College of Human Medicine and residents within the Hurley Medical Center system.
A integrated approach to treatment and rehabilitation
Hurley’s Neuropsychology Services are fully integrated into Hurley’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Team and Trauma Team. This means that rather than seeing one specialist, patients see an entire team, including a physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, physiatrist (specializes in physical medicine, rehabilitation, and pain medicine), surgeons, neurologists, geriatricians, pediatricians, intensivists, and any specialty physicians involved in a patient’s treatment.
Our Neuropsychology Services also hosts the Brain Injury Association of Michigan Support Group once a month at the Brain Function Assessment Center.
Hurley Medical Center’s rehabilitation neuropsychologists specialize in the following treatments and therapies:
- Adjustment to disability counseling
- Behavioral management
- Capacity assessment
- Cognitive rehabilitation
- Developmental assessment
- Family-centered care
- Family support and education
- Neuropsychological assessment
- Non-pharmacologic pain management
- Transdisciplinary treatment
- Psychotherapy
Complete, effective follow-up after discharge
After patients have been discharged from Hurley Medical Center, our Neuropsychology Services staff follows up with them as outpatients at the nearby Brain Function Assessment Center, providing assessment, further treatment, family interventions, and psychotherapy when necessary.
Patient- and Family-Centered Care
Because we recognize that neurologic illness and/or disease affects the entire family, Patient- and Family-Centered Care is a crucial part of Hurley’s inpatient neuropsychology services, with patients and their families typically participating in one or more family conferences during a patient’s treatment. Family support and education is a critical component of comprehensive care for an individual with a serious neurologic injury or illness. Our neuropsychologists often meet with the family separately if a loved one is too ill or injured to participate.
