Progressive Care Unit
Highly specialized care for cardiac patients during recovery
The Progressive Care Unit at Hurley Medical Center provides 24-hour observation of cardiac patients who, in many cases, are able to be out of their beds and moving around but who also require constant monitoring for existing or potential heart problems. Some of our patients are experiencing acute symptoms and come from Hurley’s Emergency Department, while other patients come from our Cardiovascular Services Department, have ongoing or chronic heart problems, and need a period of supervised care in order to better assess their condition in a safe environment.
The Progressive Care Unit is a 28-bed facility staffed by board-certified cardiologists and specialists in internal medicine. Our physicians are supported by approximately 40 highly experience registered nurses and seven nursing assistants with special training in the care of cardiac patients. A number of our patients have other illnesses or disorders in addition to their heart problems; we work closely with physicians from throughout the hospital to provide coordinated care.
As part of our commitment to the training of future medical professionals, all of the residents in Hurley’s Graduate Medical Education programs experience a rotation in the PCU.
Patient- and Family-Centered Care
We provide care from a patient- and family-centered perspective. Each of our patients is an individual deserving of respect, whose questions will be answered and whose emotional needs will be addressed.
