Provides emergency medical care to sick and injured adults and children
Our emergency physicians are all affiliated with the University of Michigan Medical School and work as a team with physician assistants, nurses, emergency room technicians, medical social workers, transporters and administrative staff to treat patients as quickly and effectively as possible. In addition to their high levels of experience and training, they are actively involved in teaching future healthcare professionals and in participating in ongoing research programs. The most advanced emergency care available anywhere in the region
Highly advanced medical technology
Hurley's Emergency Department is equipped with the latest technology, including full radiology equipment (x-ray, bedside ultrasound, 64-slice CT-scan and MRI) within the Emergency Department itself, in order to quickly diagnose patient conditions and minimize the need to transfer patients to other areas of the hospital. The Emergency Department also uses the computerized LIFENET system that enables local emergency-services providers to electronically send an EKG tracing from a patient’s home to Hurley. This real-time data vastly improves the quality of information by providing immediate, direct contact with appropriate resources, such as on-call cardiologists at Hurley’s Cardiac Services Department and Cardiac Catheter Lab. It also can help emergency responders and physicians determine the most effective course of action during transport to the hospital and upon arrival.
A special focus on older adult emergency care
Our entire Emergency Department staff is trained in senior-care programs such as GENE (Geriatric Emergency Nursing Education) and NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders). Every physician, nurse, clinician and support staff delivers clinical excellence with compassion, speed and dignity.
Children's Emergency Department designed specifically for children's unique needs
Hurley's Children's Emergency Department is truly a state-of-the-art facility—from the way it's decorated to the specially-sized medical equipment for children’s diagnosis and treatment to the separate entrance and waiting area. Our staff is specially trained in the emergency care of children, and our caring, compassionate Child Life Program experts make emergency treatment less scary.
Critical Decision Unit
The Emergency Department also has a Critical Decision Unit (CDU) where we can provide short-term observation and/or other additional care to patients who may not require a full inpatient admission to Hurley Medical Center.
