Trauma Recovery Center
Hurley Medical Center’s Trauma Recovery Center (TRC) is a grant-funded program that offers free, confidential resources to help individuals in Genesee County overcome the traumatic effects of violence. The program is the first in Michigan. It is staffed by professionals dedicated to helping victims through all stages of recovery. Participants do not have to report an incident to the police or file criminal charges to access this free service.
Real Hope. Real Help.
The TRC specializes in supporting victims of the following crimes:
- Gun violence
- Violent assault
- Sexual Abuse
- Domestic violence
- Child Abuse/Neglect
- Human trafficking
- Elder abuse
How Does It Work?
The TRC team coordinates immediate crisis support alongside medical care, and follows up with patients after discharge. Most victims of violence struggle with these common responses in the aftermath of their experience:
- Trouble sleeping
- Trouble focusing at school or work
- Feeling afraid
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Strained relationships with family and friends
- Using alcohol or drugs to escape
- Lost sense of identity
These symptoms make it difficult to take advantage of services for which victims qualify, so the TRC team members accompany them and help wherever needed, providing:
- Emergency stabilization
- Victim compensation support
- Educational support
- Personal Protection Orders (PPOs)
- Legal support and assistance
- Employment resources
Most importantly, they give victims a familiar face to associate with during a time when they have been uprooted from everything in their lives. This helps them better meet their own needs as they transition from the hospital to long-term recovery. Care also extends to secondary supports of all ages living in Genesee County.
