Hurley is leading the fight against diabetes with highly-recognized diabetes education programs for adults, children and pregnant women.

Diabetes Classes

Diabetes classes or appointments are offered at many different times to meet a variety of scheduling needs. Education may be individual or in a classroom setting, depending on patient need or preference. 

THIS CLASS HELPS YOU BEFORE YOU HAVE DIABETES

Pre-Diabetes ($45 fee) 1½ hour class
 •Healthy eating and portion control
•Exercise
•A blood sugar meter may be provided

THESE CLASSES HELP YOU WHEN YOU HAVE DIABETES

Initial Class – It all starts here! – 1½ hour class
•Learn what the program/classes are about and how to eat healthy

Individual Assessment Appointment – ½ hour depending on need
•Learning and other health care needs are identified
•Education plan is developed between yourself and the educator(s)

Meal Plan Class – 1 hour class
•Your individual meal plan is given to you with instruction

Diabetes and You – 1½ hour class
•Find out what diabetes is and your risk factors
•High blood sugar – What is it? What can you do about it?
•Talk about having diabetes and your feelings
•Stress and diabetes
•Ways to change and help yourself
•Goal writing – making a plan

Nutrition #1 – 1 hour class
•Review of your meal plan
•Ways to add fiber and limit the fat in your meal plan
•Ways to sweeten your foods
•Ways to limit the salt in the foods that you eat

Nutrition #2 – 1 hour class
•Review of serving sizes
•Label reading
•Ways to eat out and stay on your meal plan
•Ways to use the recipes you like

Taking Charge – 1½ hour class
•Ways to tell how you and your diabetes are doing
•Ways to take better care of yourself
•Looking at diabetes complications and what you can do about them
•Things you can do to help yourself with your diabetes

Medication Class – 1-2 hours depending on medications
•Low blood sugar – knowing about it and helping yourself
•Diabetes pills, insulin and other injectable diabetes medication
•Learning how to inject yourself, if needed

Monitoring Class – 1 hour class
•Ways to make sure your meter is working right
•Poking yourself once to get a good result
•Learning what your blood sugar means

Follow-up – ½ hour class
•After you have finished your program/classes, we help make sure you are doing okay with all you have learned

Diabetes Basics Class ($45 fee) – 1½ hour class
•For those who have health insurance that does not cover diabetes education
•Covers healthy eating and answers your questions about diabetes

Free Class for those who do not have insurance – 2 hour class
•A class on general nutrition and diabetes

Insulin Pump Education Program
•Individualized instruction for people who are going on an insulin pump
