Smoking Cessation

Hurley is proud to be a smoke-free campus

As one example of Hurley Medical Center’s commitment to the health and well-being of our patients, employees, physicians, visitors, and community, Hurley became an entirely smoke-free campus as of January 1, 2011. Being smoke-free sends a clear message that Hurley is committed to creating and supporting healthy communities.

Smoking is a very serious health risk

Smoking is one of the worst habits a person can have. Smoking has been proven to cause significant damage to the brain, lung tissue, red blood cells, arteries (arteriosclerosis), joint tissue (arthritis), pancreas, liver, kidneys, teeth, gums, immune system and cellular DNA. Smoking is a major contributor to the leading causes of death, including stroke, heart disease, and cancer.

The deadly facts about smoking

  • In Michigan alone, 14,500 people die every year from smoking
  • 1600 die every year from secondhand smoke
  • 65,000 kids in Michigan will try cigarettes this year
  • 298,000 of these will eventually die from smoking if today’s trends continue
