Senior Services: Community Programs
Dementia caregiver education
Hurley Medical Center co-sponsors a program for family members caring for a loved one with dementia and/or memory loss, along with the Alzheimers Association and Valley Area Agency on Aging. The program, Creating Confident Caregivers, utilizes the university-tested Savvy Caregiver Program. Led by dementia care specialists, the two-hour sessions are held once a week for six weeks and provide participants with information, skills and attitudes to manage stress and increase effective caregiving skills. The classes take place in the Hurley Health Services Board Room on the Hurley West Flint Campus on Linden Rd. Free respite care is offered for family members with memory loss so that caregivers can attend classes. This special 6-week series takes place March 1-April 5, 2012.
"Dinner & Movie" nights for seniors
Hurley Medical Center offers monthly “Dinner & Movie” events to older adults in the region in order to help them become familiar and comfortable with Hurley Medical Center when they’re well, rather than when dealing with serious health conditions. For $5, the event includes a 3:00-4:00 p.m. early-bird special dinner (includes main entrée, 2 side dishes, drink and dessert) in Hurley’s cafeteria, followed by the showing of a feature film in Hurley’s comfortable Merliss Brown Auditorium.
Prior to the start of the film, a Hurley physician, nurse or other professional gives a quick, 10-15 minute educational talk on topics such as living with diabetes, preventing falls and joint replacement. Seniors also receive a free goody bag stuffed with health information, Hurley Medical Center information, popcorn, bottled water, coffee or tea, and other items. Hurley also provides free parking for these events.
Speakers' Bureau: geriatric health-themed topics
Throughout the year, Hurley geriatricians present health education talks at community events geared toward the general public. These geriatricians are part of the Hurley Speakers’ Bureau and are available for other speaking engagements on geriatric health issues.
Convenient parking for seniors
