Family Weight Loss

Directed by the Hurley Center for Health Outcomes, this family weight loss management program for 9-18 year olds focuses on getting them to move more and eat less. Children attend classes, as well as the person the child lives with or is responsible for them. Some sessions involve physical activity, while other sessions focus on discussions between the children, the responsible adult, and a Hurley pediatric psychologist or dietitian.

Adults and children supporting each other for a common goal

Each adult-child pair chooses a weight-loss goal so they can support each other. The adults and children are measured before, midway, and after the program. Our first two programs were very successful, with all the adult-child pairs losing weight and inches!

5-2-1-0

Using the Academy of Pediatrics’ system of 5-2-1-0, we convey the message that every day, children should: eat 5 fruits & vegetables, have 2 hours or less of screen time, have 1 hour of physical activity, and drink 0 sugar-sweetened drinks. We promote 5-2-1-0 at every event we attend, with the aim of helping children learn how to eat nutritional foods, be more active, and lead healthier lives.
