New Children's Emergency Department Opens

March 5-Hurley's Children's Hospital now has a brand new state-of-the-art Children's Emergency Department, which opened on the same day as the new Paul F. Reinhart Emergency Trauma Center. The region's only dedicated children's Emergency Department, our new Children's Emergency Department represents the highest level of pediatric emergency care anywhere.

The new state-of-the-art Children's Emergency Department: designed specifically for children's unique needs

Every detail was considered when designing this innovative, cuttinig-edge facility—décor, distraction games to keep young children engaged, specially-sized medical equipment for children’s diagnosis and treatment, a separate entrance and waiting area, highly-trained clinical staff specialized in the needs of children, and our caring, compassionate Child Life Program experts who make emergency treatment less scary.

Treating children with compassion and understanding

The medical treatment of children requires special sensitivity on the part of physicians, physician assistants, nurses and other medical and administrative staff. In the Pediatric Emergency area, we have two primary goals: to provide the best medical care possible for young patients, and to reduce the anxiety and pain that are often part of emergency medical situations.

Members of Hurley's Emergency Department staff

Our medical staff is highly trained in child-focused treatment methods, such as pediatric sedation and pain relief, and uses special equipment designed just for children.

Child Life Services

Supporting our physicians are highly trained Child Life Advocates who work directly with your child during procedures. They provide positive distractions from frightening or painful procedures and help your child cope with the hospital and treatments.

About Our Staff

Our physician assistants, nurses and medical assistants have specific training in the emergency medical care of children. Residents from our Pediatrics Residency Program and Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program serve rotations within the Pediatric Emergency area. In addition, our Pediatric Emergency area team works closely with medical staff throughout Hurley Medical Center, from allergies to surgery, poison control, neurology and more.

Research in Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Our Children's Emergency Department is highly involved in ongoing research in pediatric emergency medicine. We are one of five participating sites in the Great Lakes Emergency Medical Services for Children Research Network, part of a national collaborative of pediatric emergency medicine departments.
