Hurley & Kohl’S Department Stores Team Up For Healthy Kids
Sept. 17-“Kohl’s Cares for Healthy Kids” Event Kick-off Saturday, September 24, 2011, 11 am – 2 pm at the Flint Farmer's Market, 420 East Boulevard, Flint, Michigan
Kohl’s Department Stores has awarded $137,745 to the Hurley Foundation for the second year of its “Kohl’s Cares for Healthy Kids” program. The program's goal is to teach children and their parents to make healthy food choices and increase their daily physical activity. This year-long awareness campaign will feature events at the Flint Farmer's Market, Flint Children's Museum, seven schools, the University of Michigan Recreation Center in Flint, and Crossroads Village. An extensive media campaign, including radio commercials and PSAs on several different stations, as well as updates to the website: www.kohlshurleykids.com, will reach parents with information about the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles in their children. Print materials, including pamphlets, will be widely distributed at events and through physician offices.
Flint, Michigan, ranks tenth in the nation for obesity rates. One third of American children are obese, which places them at increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses. Increasing numbers of children are being seen at Hurley Medical Center for asthma and diabetes, conditions which often stem from being overweight/obese.
Please join us for the “Kohl’s Cares for Healthy Kids” kick-off on Saturday, September 24, 2011, from 11 am – 2 pm at the Flint Farmer's Market (420 East Boulevard Dr.). The event will feature remarks by Flint Mayor Dayne Walling, Hurley President and Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Wardell, a music show by Radio Disney with dancing and physical activities, an interactive cooking demonstration in which children will make a healthy snack, and "stations" where children can try different vegetables. Prizes will be awarded and drawings for Kohl’s gift cards will be held.
Kohl’s commitment to Hurley Medical Center is made possible through the Kohl’s Cares® program, which raises funds for children’s health and educational opportunities through the sale of special items such as the $5 books and plush toys that are displayed near the checkout counters. Net profits from the sales go to support children’s health and educational opportunities in communities nationwide.
This award from Kohl’s marks the sixth consecutive year of its partnership with Hurley on children’s health initiatives, which have included rehabilitation, asthma, and childhood injury prevention. Since 2006, Kohl’s has awarded Hurley $669,539.
