The 2nd winner of Week 3's Showcase Story, in the words of Melissa K:

"It all started on May 12, 2010. I was 38 weeks pregnant and enjoying that my son would soon be arriving. I went to a normal doctor's appointment at Hurley Medical Center. My day started out with a fetal activity study and then followed with a visit from my wonderful Hurley doctor. During the fetal activity study, the technician noticed that the baby wasn't moving quite like she had hoped he would be, and she thought it would be best for me to come back for a repeat study. I returned on May 14, 2010 and when I was hooked up to the monitor, he wouldn't move at all. We went for an ultrasound to see if everything was ok and still couldn't get him to move.

"By now I was scared. The Hurley high-risk doctor told the ultrasound tech that I was to deliver my baby that day. I was 38 weeks and 5 days along, but still shed a tear as I was walked to L&D to be prepped for delivery.Things quickly took a turn for the worst and I was rushed in for an emergency C-section. My baby boy was delivered at 3:24pm on Friday May 14, 2010 weighing 7lbs, 8oz and 19 3/4in long, but he didn't cry. He was as white as a ghost and his hemoglobin was 2 (normal is 11). He was immediately rushed off to the NICU

"Once in Hurley's NICU, he received 2 blood transfussions and was required to stay for a total of 8 days. He received great care while in the NICU. Before leaving he was diagnosed with Maternal/Fetal Transfusion, meaning that he lost 90% of his blood back to me through the umbilical cord, and almost didn't make it. I thank Hurley every day because my now almost 2-yea-old is alive and healthy thanks to them."
