5-2-1-0: Nutrition & Exercise Guidelines

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ system of 5-2-1-0 is an important part of the Hurley Center for Health Outcomes mission to improve the quality of life, health and health status of the communities served by Hurley Medical Center.

Obesity, diabetes, and the many health problems caused by these two conditions are far too common in our young people in Genesee County. That’s why at every event, presentation, or health fair, Hurley Center for Health Outcomes staff promotes 5-2-1-0, with the aim of helping children learn how to eat nutritional foods, be more active, and lead healthier lives.

5-2-1-0 means that every day, children should:

  • eat 5 fruits & vegetables
  • have 2 hours or less of screen time
  • have 1 hour of physical activity
  • drink 0 sugar-sweetened drinks
