Ahmed M. Akl, M.D., ABR, FICS, Chair, Department of  Radiation Oncology
Board Certified in Radiation Oncology

Dr. Akl has been board certified as a radiation oncologist since June of 1992. He completed a fellowship in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Toronto-Bayview Regional Cancer Center. He is licensed to practice in Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, and South Dakota. Dr. Akl has numerous research publications and has been a reviewer in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics since 1992.





Guy M. Boike, M.D., Director of Gynecologic Oncology
Board Certified in Gynecologic Oncology

As the only Board-Certified gynecologic oncologist practicing in the mid-Michigan area north to Traverse City, Dr. Boike provides care to patients located throughout Michigan. Dr. Boike graduated from Wayne State University’s medical school, completed a fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, and obtained a PhD in biology also at Wayne State. He has taught at both Northwestern University in Chicago and the University of Miami. Dr. Boike brings over 15 years experience to his treatment of women with gynecologic cancers.





Rizwan Danish, M.D.,
Chief of Medical Oncology and Hematology
Board Certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology and Internal Medicine

Dr. Danish completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In addition to serving as Hurley's Chief of Medical Oncology and Hematology, he holds the position of Cancer Liaison Physician for the Hospital Cancer Program at Hurley Medical Center. Dr. Danish also has numerous publications and awards; chief among them is his nomination and receipt of the 2005 Physician of the Year Award at a ceremony, luncheon, Congressional reception and a personal private meeting with President George W. Bush, held in March 2006 in Washington, D.C.





Susumu Inoue, M.D.,
Director, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology; Assistant Director, Pediatric Education
Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology

Dr. Inoue is a graduate of the Okayama University Medical School in Okayama, Japan. He completed post-graduate Pediatric training at Okayama University Hospital. After completing his residency at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, he completed two fellowships – one in pediatric hematology at Children’s and another in Cytogenetics at The Child Research Center of Michigan in Detroit. He holds faculty appointments at both Wayne State University School of Medicine and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Dr. Inoue has extensive research interests and is widely published.
Selected as one of the “Best Doctors in America” four times, Dr. Inoue was also honored with the Pinnacle Award – Hurley Medical Center’s highest achievement for physicians.





Raouf A. Mikhail, MD, FACS, FRCS.(C), Director of Surgical Oncology
Chief, Oncology Program; Chief, General Surgery

Dr. Mikhail is a board certified surgeon with sub-specialty fellowship training in Head and Neck Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the world-renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He has been re-certified in surgery twice since his initial certification. On his last re-certification examination, Dr. Mikhail was ranked at the 95th percentile compared to other surgeons that took the examination around the country.

Dr. Mikhail treats about 100 new breast cancer patients per year. He is an expert in the multi modality treatment of breast cancer and regularly attends all the national surgical meetings related to breast cancer treatment. He is up to date on all the latest advances in breast cancer and the surgical, medical, and radiotherapy treatments available to breast cancer patients. Dr. Mikhail has performed several hundred Sentinel Lymph Node biopsies for breast cancer patients since the late 1990’s.

Dr. Mikhail is regarded as an expert in the field of breast cancer treatment and breast surgery, head and neck surgery, and other areas of surgical oncology. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Royal College of Surgeons, Canada. Among others, he is a member of The American Head and Neck Society, The Society of Surgical Oncology, The American Society of Clinical Oncology, The American Society of Breast Surgeons, and MD Anderson Associates (founding member). He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Michigan State University. Dr. Mikhail also held the position of state chairman of the commission on Cancer, Cancer Liaison program, American College of Surgeons (2000-2006). This position is granted by the American College of Surgeons to leaders in the field of cancer throughout the nation.





Nkechi Onwuzurike, MD, Medical Director, Pediatric Hemophilia Treatment Center
Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology

After completing medical school at the University of Nigeria School of Medicine, Dr. Onwuzurike completed residencies both in the United States and abroad. She was a pediatric resident at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan, and Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. She completed a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Dr. Onwuzurike is widely published and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development in the College of Human medicine at Michigan State University. She has been with Hurley Medical Center since 1996.
