 Obstetrics and Gynecology

The obstetric and gynecology residency training program, affiliated with Michigan State University, educates residents to provide in-depth consultative services and competent primary care in this specialty.

Our four-year training program, based at Hurley Medical Center, is staffed by board-certified faculty in fetal maternal medicine, gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology and ambulatory care. Additionally, fifteen faculty members provide an in-depth clinical and academic experience.

In the first year of training, residents concentrate on the acquisition of psychomotor, cognitive and attitudinal skills necessary to provide care for the uncomplicated gynecologic or low-risk obstetric patients. During the second year, residents acquire knowledge regarding the medical and obstetric problems of "high-risk" patients. Skills are also developed in the diagnosis and management of the gynecologic patient. The third year provides increasing responsibility for preoperative and postoperative care, the management of difficult obstetrical problems and the performance of a variety of gynecologic surgeries. Residents are also expected to maintain an active interest in the application of the basic medical sciences. In the fourth year, residents become chief residents and become responsible for their junior colleagues, supervise the staff consultation service and undertake the management of the more difficult gynecologic and obstetric patient.

The program’s curriculum is designed to meet the American Board of Obstetric and Gynecology educational requirements with a minimum of forty-eight months of training. Our rotations include exposure to the following areas:

This experience is provided in general obstetric and gynecologic clinics as well as the specialty clinics--breast, colposcopy, endocrinology, high-risk obstetrics and oncology.

Our training program has proven to be a successful entry point for post residency subspecialty fellowship training.

When applying to our program, all candidates must utilize the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
