What is a Sleep Disorder? A sleep disorder is a physiological, biological, or psychological condition that chronically disturbs sleep. While everyone's sleep patterns are unique, adequate sleep allows a person to stay alert throughout the day. One of the following may indicate a sleep disorder:
Daytime sleepiness
Excessive use of sleeping pills
Morning headaches
Heavy snoring
Irregular breathing during sleep
Failing asleep while driving
Sleep disorders are potentially serious medical problems. As many as 10 percent of American adults are affected by a sleep disorder--and that percentage increases with age. If your daytime activities are influenced by your nighttime sleep--or lack of it--you, may have a sleep disorder.
